A new group of education forums announced.
But it isn’t a reschedule of Common Core forum cancelled by the State Education Department after the Commissioner was heckled, instead New York State United Teachers and the Alliance for Quality Education say they will fill the void. The groups say the forums, to be held in the Capital Region, Long Island, Syracuse and Western New York, will enable parents and educators to share their solutions for addressing the problems caused by what they consider to be the state’s rushed implementation of the Regents’ Reform agenda.
Details, including place and time for the forums have not been finalized, but NYSUT spokesman Carl Korn tells News Radio 810 and 103.1 WGY that the information will be released shortly.
Given the concern parents and teachers have been expressing, he says they expect a large turnout at all the forums.
NYSUT is also calling for a three-year moratorium on high-stakes consequences of standardized testing. The union says schools need time and resources to fix the deficiencies in SED's implementation.
