3 to 9 After Stealing from Charlton Fire District

The former Secretary-Treasurer of the Charlton Fire Department has been sentenced to 3-9 years in prison for stealing 500 thousand from the department.

Saratoga County District Attorney Jim Murphy tells WGY News Virginia DeCapria used the money for shopping, trips, and even plastic surgery.  The D.A. says DeCapria has added insult to injury by blaming the volunteer based group for letting her get away with it through lax accounting practices.  Murphy says there is a lesson to be learned: the person writing the check should never be the only person balancing the books.

The State Comptroller’s office uncovered the theft during an audit.  The deceit came as quite a shock to the other volunteer members of the department.  Murphy says their focus was on saving lives and they never suspected DeCapria was robbing the district.
